Sister Helen Prejean, whose anti-death penalty book inspired
the film"Dead Man Walking," brought her crusade Monday
to the United Nations
Human Rights Commission.

"I especially appeal to my own the country, the United
States ofAmerica,to dismantle the machinery of death, which each
year executes more and more people. "

The Louisiana nun told the commission that forbidding capital
punishment
under international law would safeguard the "essential dignity" of all humans.

Last year, the commission voted 27-11 in favor of a resolution
opposing the death penalty and urging capital-punishment countries
to limit itsuse.
